However, the future of telecommunications resides not in Wifi, which is a very closed protocol to develop for, but in 3G communications which service providers are beginning to offer. 3G will allow high speed internet access unlinked from a Wifi hotspot. As soon as it manages to permeate and settle in countries, it will be cheaper than land line internet access.

FON is an interesting idea. The problem is, it’s very dangerous at the same time. Having someone access your internet connection through Wifi is like opening a door to a thief. Wifi is incredibly insecure, especially on an unencrypted network that FON tries to promote. And this FON does not provide enough of an income for a separate hot spot dedicated to it.

So, my point is, although it is a very pretty idea, it’s too naive to be true. The ‘internet for everybody’ concept is too idealistic to be a reality - too much of a conscience cleaner for the rich really.

It’s good to see some effort though. Makes you wonder why didn’t this person start the project while he was in direct charge of a telecommunications company in Spain though.
