Controlling the World Media
Rupert Murdoch is engulfing more and more companies worldwide. As they destroy more and more of the competition, they have almost full control of western(and some eastern)media, consequently controlling more and more people’s minds, with information which they are free to manipulate, showing only what they believe convenient for their political backers, private financers etc… This is not only happening with the media, but competition is being destroyed in many fields, such as Telecommunications(telefonica is rapidly taking over with their mobile phone operator Movistar) or even beer brewing(all the canadian beers are now owned by foreign, mainly US, companies.) I believe that mergers are a good thing, but when multi-billion dollar mergers happen between companies, which leave a monopoly, it is bad for competition and ultimately for the consumers themselves. The main concern is it happens in everything from Telecommunications to Make-up companies.
‘The bussiness of America is business’. Although 12 years of republican rule during the twenties led to the Great Depression, the latter is not a cause of the former, and this individualist, ’skys the limit’ approach to economics fashioned America into the superpower it is today, despite its many faults (in America everything haas to be bigger and better than in Europe, so its faults are bigger and better as faults). Monopolisation of media is terrible, yes, but there are always independent sources. Always. For example, even in the west one can find the occasional column that doesn’t spit on orthodox eurpoe.
This leads to my ‘cyber-commie’ manifesto: Information wants to be free, and it is well on the way to being free.
Newspapers in general tend to give balanced views. We all know this is often not the case, but there and again there are independent papers. If you are really cynical (like nick and me) about this issue, the Internet if a prime source. Finally, the latest rage on the web is also a great way to express oneself for free. Podcasts, to name one, are a brilliant source of independent news, if you trust no-one else. Otherwise, I agree with Nick on this one (struck lucky on this one Nick!).
