CHina prejudice?
Ive been talking to some people about my probable trip to china sometime this year and many people seemed to be suspicious, or have prejudices towards china…For me, it is no.1 on my list of places to visit because of its industrial boom and the modern changes, more than the ancient dynasties and traditions, which other countries also have.ALthough my admiration for china is huge, it is no larger than my admiration for taiwan for resisting political change, and a great superpower for so long. Do I live in a different circle of people or is china really looked at with a different eye around the world??to our friends from taiwan(croc.juice etc)and around the world: in what way is china seen by common people in your country??
China? Yes, it is a growing tourist attraction, and it is going to be a world superpower. however, I’m surprised to see your benevolence towards the Chinese dictatorship, taking into consideration your aversion to Bush’s apparent tyranny. The Chinese have been oppresed for long, and Taiwan is a noble symbol of resistance against the Communist threat in the mainland. In reality, the ‘genuine’ China has a seat on Taiwan, for it was the Nationalists who escaped persecution there.
Do not be fooled by China’s apparent benevolent capitalism. The Chinese switched to capitalism in the late 1980’s, only having seen that almost every form of Communism ever tried has failed. Their dictatorial regime is merely an opressive tyranny, not Communism, and the only reason it has not dissapeared (yet), is the Chinese government’s anticipation of events (that led to the Soviet Union’s fortunate demise), and their iron-grip on society. Although Hong-Kong and Beijing are touristic attractions, the evidence of Communist opression is visible in the countryside.
Just look at the disgraceful cencorship of the Internet that China has imposed upon their people. Out of moral reasons and ethic, I would not be attracted to visit China while the Communists are still in power.

Hi! Haven’t been here for ages, mainly because of the massive amount of schoolwork I’m slowly being crushed to death beneath (don’t finish till September, at the end of which the new school year starts. grrrrr). Anyways. China. Yes! Go visit! Brilliant culture, extremely dynamic. Yes, the government is a fascist, brutal dictatorship but you’re not going there to meet the rulers of the place, right?
People in Taiwan have mixed views about China. People certainly don’t like being bullied by the Chinese government; however, as Adrian said, China is now completely capitalist, as is Taiwan and the two countries are linked very closely through trade. Many people here are moving to China, where the cost of living is lower, to open businesses. Most Taiwanese people don’t have a problem with Chinese people - all the people on this island except for the aborigines were, after all, originally from China and came to Taiwan not too long ago - and many would like to be part of mainland China someday, though not communist China. Formal independence for Taiwan would be brilliant, though not all that probable. In general, people here have a problem with the government, not the Chinese people.
