EU equality??
today in fiumicino airport in rome, I (with uk passport) along with two other brits and a czech were held back, almost stoipped from checking in, as our friends with spanish passport waltzed through the line and checked their bags. It took 15minutes to get the check in cleared. Isnt it what the EU is for?freedom of movement?(among others). anybody know why uk+czech rep. are on berlusconi’s black list?
Nick, youre very confused in this issue. The EU was created to eventually promote freedom of movement between countries. However, this is not yet so, not because of Berlusconi’s prejudices towards brits and czechs (which is inexistent, btw), but because countries in the EU, the UK among them, firmly do not want people just wandering in and out of their frontiers. The UK is one of the more fervent anti-freedom of movement campaigners, both Labour and Conservative, and the newer countries in the EU are not yet completely implemented into the union. For one, cohesion funds have not yet even been agreed for the newer countries, let alone the freedom of movement.
For your interest, the freedom of movement you talk about is called the Schengen Plan. That is whay all Schengen countries get a separate terminal in Madrid airport.
Just so you keep in mind before trying to claim your rights as an EU passenger, in Schengen countries, you dont have to be submitted to customs inspection (unless you have something to declare), but you do have to have your passport checked. This happens to all Brits, because they are the ones who refuse the Schengen Plan!
