crisis in ecuador
After 5 days of crisis in the streets of ecuadors capital city, Quito, the political crisis in the country seemed to come to an end a few days ago. The unconstitutional presentation of Alfredo Palacio ,new president of the republic, finished with various days of protests. The armed forces, who firmly backed president Lucio Gutierrez(graduated at the military school in sport education) stood by him until his last hours. They threw over 1500 tear bombs in an area of merely a few blocks, rolled out kilometres of barbed wire and stood proudly in uniform and plastic shields in what looked like preparation for battle. In what looked like a revival of the economic crisis suffered in argentina not long ago, and in ecuador just a few years before, people rushed out of the houses and poured down the streets to recover what little money they could trust to the remaining banks(the ones that were left standing after the last crisis).Meanwhile, the president went on television to say protests were not as strong as one might think from hearing radio or tv news. “Im sure it is not over 10,000 people”he said publicly with a view of disconcern….Lead by Radio “la Luna fm” protesters stood for days on end outside the presidential palace, and when word got out that it was possible the president had fled to the brazilian embassy, not only was this also covered with a ring of thousands of people, but so was the airport, to make sure the president had absolutelyt no way of getting out. Even thou condoleezza might not like the fact, ecuador has a new president, and alfredo palacio is the sixth president in 9 years(with a supposed 4 year period for each)…….WHy can neither ecuador or other south american states maintain a government for over 2 years??
note::even though the armed forces might have been a bit violent, it is useful to add the fact that the protesters had nothing but signs, pots and pans, flags, and a clear vision in their minds.
